For some reason, the headline of the Clinton story was written in capital letters and occupied three lines; Trump's, on the other hand, was written in lowercase, in only two lines. But that is not all. Accompanying Hillary's story is a photo of her, and two subordinate stories, Trump's reaction and an FBI analysis. On the other hand, Trump’s leaked tape story is complemented by a photo of Haiti, a story of the same subject and another one about how Hurricane Matthew did not hit Florida as expected.
What was the editorial criterion? In my experience of more than fifteen years in the media, the decision was twofold. First, on the day that Trump’s tape was leaked, Hurricane Matthew occupied an important space in the news cycle, so the editors of the Times didn’t want to leave it outside the newspaper front page; when Comey's letter was released there was nothing else on the agenda, so they were able to display all the coverage. Second, the New York Times' ideal of objectivity "forced" the newspaper to give equal opportunity to both candidates, and on many more occasions this aversion to show any bias led them to treat Trump with far less animosity than their liberal ideals should have presumed. In this case, it happened as Thiel said, they took Trump literally and published the story, but they did not take him seriously, and they did not give him the coverage or the angle the news deserved.
Fox News and Breitbart, on the other hand? For days and days and days and days, their main news stories were related to the Clinton emails’ scandal. Name the genre, interviews, news stories, analysis and opinion. Everything was focused on helping Trump’s candidacy. They were perhaps less ethical but much more effective for the media’s ultimate goals.
Now let's look at the New York Times’ cover of the day after Clinton’s email investigation was reopened (Sunday, October 30).
